Alec I'd have thought you'd find Cruise Liners sheer luxury compared to what you worked on (not really knowing what you did, but every picture I've seen of Seamen they've been in cramped conditions)

That was back in the days of wood!! Cat of nines and the like. Bit before my time Les, just!
Not that I ever worked on cruise ships, but cabins were always spacious if you did not mind sharing not just with people either. Cruise ships no longer have Europeans working the day to day jobs just a few who work directly with the passengers. IE Pursers and barmanagers. The rest work, sadly for peanuts and thats why you get a lot of smiling monkeys.
Where you lay your head is not that important when you are working. Although when I became senior enough and could pick what I wanted cabins then became a status symbol.
